KING OF CALIFORNIA Micro Sprint Series – FRESNO, Calif. (April 16, 2018) – The first green flag of the 2018 King of California Series finally dropped at Dixon Speedway Friday Night for round one.
In the class dubbed as “the future of racing,” the Racepunk Restricted Class young Corey Day kept his 2018 streak of success going in dramatic fashion. Colby Thornhill who made the trip down from Washington proved to be a thorn in Day’s side all night long. Looking ultra fast throughout the night Thornhill gave Day about all he could handle Friday night. Thornhill clawed and scratched his way to the front to challenge Day, but young Day would not succumb to the pressure. Your reigning Tulsa Shootout champion took his win total for 2018 to 3 for 3. Thornhill was able to bring his CS9 chassis home in the runner up spot.
However there was another fierce battle on the track. Hanford, California’s Eli Bookout made the trip up thanks to Hamblin Motorsports. After capturing the final California micro sprint race win of 2017 Bookout’s confidence has been soaring ever since. It would take until the main to find his groove but once he did, he really took off. Bookout proved to be the man on a mission in Friday Nights Racepunk Restricted A main. He started from the 12th spot and started picking off guys like a seasoned pro. He took his CS9 all the way to the third position and put himself on the podium, capturing the Max Papis Innovations 3rd place award.
The opening round of the King of California Micro Sprint Series did not disappoint. Drivers from all over the west coast came to run and put on a memorable show for the fans at Dixon Speedway. However the celebrations wouldn’t last long as the drive down to Stockton for round two at Delta Speedway loomed ahead.
In your Racepunk Restricted Class things would get dicey early at round two. Qualifying was ultra competitive with only a couple tenths of a second separating most the field. Devon Courtnier was able to take home the Schoenfeld Headers Restricted QuickTime award. But as the night went on the stars aligned for another young man early in his car racing career.
Caden Stoll rolled into Delta with a fresh PMP Chassis and a new level of confidence. Having been one of the nation’s fastest amateur motocross racers at one time in his career, Stoll has struggled to find that kind of confidence in the micro sprint.
However this night at Delta would be different. He captured the first Racepunk Restricted heat race of the night and landed on the front row for the A main. Round one winner Corey Day would have his work cut out for him starting a couple rows back. As the green flag dropped Stoll pulled out to an early lead. Things got close as Caeden Steele moved into 2nd and eventually Corey Day into 3rd. Multiple cautions would put the pressure on Stoll when it came to restarts. Yet Stoll refused to succumb to the pressure and put himself back into a maintainable lead every time. Caeden Steele and Corey Day battled tooth and nail for the 2nd spot allowing Stoll to drive away.
When the checkered flag waved it would be Caden Stoll who drove by the flag stand first and picked up just his second career victory. Caeden Steele and Corey Day would round out your podium and give a glimpse to how competitive the King of California Points championship is going to be.
The 2018 edition of the King of California Series is off and running in full swing. If opening weekend is any indication of what’s to come, we have some serious battles on our hands. All four classes are ultra competitive and have the making to go down to the wire. The season resumes in two weeks for round 3 and round 4. Round 3 exclusively presented by Salmon Motorsports is set to roll into Keller Auto Raceway at Plaza Park in Visalia, California, on Friday, April 27. Round 4 gets underway the very next evening, Saturday, April 28, at Lemoore Raceway presented by T-Zone Promotions.
