Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Calif. (September 14, 2018) —> Raio Salmon is set to make her 13th appearance of the year at Delta Speedway in search of her 4th win on the 1/7th-mile oval at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds.
Sitting just 16 points out of the Lead in the Super 600 class she finds herself in title contention with only two points races remaining. Although she held the points lead up until the last weekend at Delta she’s still within striking distance.
Title combatant, Nikko Panella, had been breathing down her neck all season. Finally able to capture his first win at the last race, it was enough to overtake Salmon for the points lead despite her pair of top 5s at the dual at Delta. Just one DNF can be pointed to at the moment on the list of “what ifs.” It came at Race 8 when she had engine troubles and was unable to complete the 30 lap feature.
“Nikko has just been running great all year,” Salmon added. “He’s proven he has what it takes to win the title and he has displayed championship caliber performances all year long.”
While it’s far from over Salmon admits the championship pressure may have sunk into her head. Now her goal is to go out and do what got her in this position in the first place. All she has on her mind is winning. That mentality already got her into the winner circle for the sixth time overall in 2018, and the first time in the King of California series.
Delta Speedway Saturday will be Salmons 36th race if the year. She’ll look to add win number 7, top 5 number 25, and top 10 number 32 in search of picking up 16 points on Panella.
“We’re just going to go out here and run for wins,” said Salmon. “That’s what got us here if we just win the chips will fall as the May.”
