Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Calif. (September 24, 2018) àRaio Salmon’s career-best season continues as she put up two impressive performances at last weekends Mark Hagopian Memorial.

To date, 2018 has been the best year of Raio Salmon’s career with 6 wins and over 20 top 5’s. Last weekend at the Mark Hagopian Memorial she continued her steamrolling season in impressive fashion. First was night one, where she came from 11th to narrowly lock herself into the 50-lap finale. She followed that up with a stellar runner-up bid in the crowning feature.

Night one saw the queen of the low line put up the 14th quickest lap time of the 35 car field. She then went out and won her heat race. Moving into the 30-lap feature she drove to the green flag from 11th. With drivers showing no mercy while vying for the coveted top 6 transfer positions Salmon muscled her way through the field and stole the final transfer in the closing stages.

For the second year in a row, she locked herself directly into the 50 lap feature through the pole shuffle. She and Cody Christensen became the only two to lock themselves in both years. The pole shuffle would be the next time she would see the track for competition. She was able to keep Ben Worth from advancing but then was eliminated by Cody Christensen.

Finally, it was time for the 50-lap feature. Salmon started from the 6th position. Early in the going drivers went for it all and it cost some of them their opportunity. However Salmon kept plugging away. While others out on the track tossed away their opportunity, Salmon found herself in it to the end.

Eventual winner, Jake Andreotti was able to get around Salmon but at the end of 50-laps he proved to be the last man standing, and for good reason, he has been money when the money is on the line.

But after all the talk, and all the hype, Salmon added another page to her career year when she crossed the stripe with the runner-up position.

“This is such a special event,” said Salmon. “I just can’t thank my team, my sponsors, and my fans, the people who believe in me the most, enough. This year just keeps getting better, I can’t believe it.”

The meaning of the moment was apparent to all that witnessed. “You just cannot script this stuff,” said one fan. “You don’t have tears in your eyes because it doesn’t mean anything. Those damn drivers left it all out there on that race track.”

The fan added another sentiment sure to be appreciated by the talented women trying to make a name for themselves. I’ll be happy to editorialize this following statement is said far too often. The fan said with conviction.

“I better never hear ‘she’s good for a girl,’ again, dammit she is just GOOD!”
