Different Year Same Story__Smith set to wrap up Lemoore title
SPRINT CAR INSIDER – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca. (September 28, 2018) – Tyler Smith is poised to wrap up another Lemoore Raceway track Championship this weekend at the Budweiser Grand Prix as he sets 137 points ahead of 2nd Ben Worth.
Should he win the title it would be his fourth in a row stretching back to the 2015 season. The last track Championship he lost was 2014 to Tristan Guardino. Keep in mind Smith also has three out of four California Speedweek titles, two King of California titles, and two Clay Cup podiums to his credit in the same time span. This season alone Smith has racked up 21 wins with 9 of them coming at Lemoore and 20 in the Non-Wing class. It’s safe to say he’s been on a pretty decent stretch.
However, this weekend offers a small twist as Smith will also contest in the number 18 Super 600 owned by engine builder, Harry Boudakian. As of today, there is a chance he may actually run the car in both classes. The initial reason Smith committed to running the super 600 class this weekend was in preparation for the upcoming California Cup which will see an all-new format and elevated purse. Last weekend Smith had a strong run going at the Mark Hagopian Memorial before trouble struck the driver in search of a Saturday night sweep.
On his quest to win five major championships in one season Lemoore Raceway is slated to become the first of official track title. With California Speedweek under his belt, he has also amassed a nearly insurmountable margin in the King of California series as well.
Next weekend Smith will attempt to official take home that title as well as the Delta Speedway track Championship. Two rounds remain in King of California competition, next Friday at Dixon Speedway, and Saturday at Delta Speedway. Smith currently holds 183 points over 2nd in King of California and 80 points over 2nd at Delta.
The next seven days are sure to be hammered down with hardware as historical run for five titles comes to a conclusion.
