Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Calif. (September 28, 2018) -> Coming into the Budweiser Grand Prix Points finale at Lemoore Raceway the Restricted class championship is going down to the wire as Caeden Steele sits just two points ahead of Guage Garcia.
Lemoore has been a place of dominance for Steele in 2018 but Garcia has been on a roll as of late, especially after last weekends hard-fought battle with Corey Day at the Mark Hagopian Memorial. Steele was not in action last weekend as he watched his main title combatant battle for the victory last week. The momentum could possibly play into the hand of Garcia but Steele holds the advantage in the win column with 3 wins to Garcia’s 1 on the 1/5th mile.
The way the Restricted class has played out this season at Lemoore Raceway indicates there is a good possibility this championship come down to a photo finish. Not once, but twice this season a Restricted class main event was decided by mere thousandths of a second. The second night of the Tachi Palace Nationals Jake Smith barely edged out Bryson Bettencourt and just weeks ago, on August 25th, Caeden Steele himself was involved in a photo finish. He beat Brandt Twitty by just inches to earn his third win at Lemoore this season.
With the title on the line, it’s far from the realm of impossibility Garcia and Steele fight to a photo finish for the title.
The two have displayed remarkable consistency all season long. For Steele, his Lemoore season has seen six top 5s and eight top tens on top of his three wins. With a nickname like, “Iceman” nerves shouldn’t play into the picture, but that is a variable that can affect seasoned professionals. No circumstance is ruled out as Steele and Garcia will have to take on the fastest Restricted class in the nation, all of which would be happy to play spoiler as they are looking to add to their win totals as well.
This would be Caeden Steele’s second career championship at Lemoore Raceway adding to his 2016 Jr. Sprint title. Can he get it done?
