Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca. (October 2, 2108) – Caeden Steele is the 2018 Lemoore Raceway Restricted class track champion after picking up three wins on the season and holding off a fierce charge down the stretch.
Coming into the final round at Lemoore Raceway the pressure was on for Caeden Steele. Coming into the final points race of the season at Lemoore Raceway Steele had just a mere two-point advantage over second before throwaways were included.
Having only two points for breathing room could cause even the Iceman to sweat. While he has been blistering fast all season and held an advantage in the win column, his title combatant had come on strong during the latter half of the year. Although throwaways would come into play, in order to be secure, Steele had to put his best foot forward and go for it.
In qualifying Saturday he ended up second to his title rival. Then in the heat race, he gathered back some confidence by marching to the front and picking up a much-needed victory. Then came the main event where it was all on the line.
In terms of total points, (not including throw outs), 2nd in the standings moved within 1 point after qualifying. Then with Steele getting the heat win while his title contender got third in his own heat, Steele earned the points back. But in any case, it was so close going into the 25-lap finale no one could predict who would take it home. By means of total points, it would be winner take all.
And they went for it all.
Steele found himself in second during the early portion of the main event chasing down another driver who hadn’t been in the lead much this year and hungry for a win. Steele held him at bay and kept him within striking distance much of the race. When third started applying the pressure, the two of them caught the leader. In a tough break for the leader, he lost his motor and left the top two to battle it out amongst themselves.
It was mono e mono, one vs two, title on the line.
They raced it out for the final points paying victory of the season. Steele did everything he could but it wasn’t enough for his fourth victory. However, it was the bigger picture that mattered. Steele knew where he stood and wisely brought his car home second.
Now that it’s all said and done Caeden Steele has officially been crowned the 2018 Lemoore Raceway Restricted Class Champion by 19 points. Steele ended up throwing away a total of 65 points to his rivals 53 and that became the difference. With one title down the pressure of wrapping up a Championship is not over just yet.
Steele has another opportunity for a title ahead of him this weekend at Delta Speedway. He will come in with the pressure again as he is the points leader looking to hold on to it. He may have more of a comfortable lead than two points, there is no comfort until the trophy is in hand. In addition to the Delta Championship Steele has the opportunity to lock up runner-up in King of California which concludes at the same event.
