Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca (October 16, 2018) – Tyler Smith finished inside of the Top three in nine out of ten attempts on the track at last weekends California Cup at Lemoore Raceway.
In a rather rare occurrence, Tyler Smith did not make it to victory lane this weekend. However, he did still come away with a little cash and his head held high after a solid performance to close out the Cal Cup weekend at Lemoore Raceway.
Friday night at Lemoore saw a hooked up and heavy track that was less than conducive to passing. With everyone having to deal with the same track a lot of it came down to luck and straight horsepower. For Tyler Smith running double duty this weekend in hopes of breaking his single-season high win record things didn’t go as planned, and the new format was unfavorable for his opportunity to make personal history.
Friday night would see just qualifying, a pair of heat races per class, and qualifiers. Ordinarily, the Cal Cup was a two-night affair offering up two chances to win, or in this case four. Such was not the case this year and a number of drivers felt it should have been. Four chances to win would have undoubtedly given Smith a window to tie and break his win record. But it all started Friday in qualifying where he earned his only top spot performance of the weekend.
To most drivers running in the top 3 nine out of ten times, they hit the track would be considered a success, but Tyler on comes to win.
He would finish third in his first non-wing heat and second in heat two. The track was nearly impossible to pass on Friday night so it left most drivers including Smith hoping for better conditions Saturday. At least he would come away with another runner-up performance in non-wing to lock into Saturday’s 40-lap affair.
In the Super 600, Smith started behind the eight-ball with 9th in qualifying but showcased immense improvement throughout the weekend. He ran second in his first heat and third in the second one. Unfortunately, it was not enough to lock himself in and he had to run a Saturday qualifier. He finished third there and then looked forward to the evening’s main events.
Saturday turned out to be more of the same track conditions and Smith cruised to a steady second place in the non-wing main. As for the Super 600 he found a way to make passes and charged up to a third-place finish to earn hard charger and $250 on behalf of Keith Day Trucking.
In total Smith actually finished inside of the top three in nine out of ten attempts at the track. After winning 24 races this year he didn’t come away from the weekend satisfied but that still speaks to the remarkable consistency of Smith and his ability to get the job done.
He will be back in action at Delta Speedway in two weeks to give another attempt at tying his single-season win total of 25. All in all at this stage of the season it all perils in comparison to being prepared to win that coveted Golden Driller in Tulsa this January. This season Smith will land in Tulsa as prepared as ever to finally put one on his mantle.
