Salmon Closes Lemoore Season with top 10

Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca (October 17, 2018). – Raio Salmon finished out her season at Lemoore Raceway with a top ten finish at last weekends California Cup.

Salmon was the points series runner up at the track after earning three wins and a lion share of top 5 finishes. She rolled into Cal Cup as a clear cut contender to win but she would have a battle on her hand.

However the new format of the Cal Cup wasn’t to the liking of many drivers. Instead of running two complete shows, and having two opportunities to earn a win, the Friday night portion would contain qualifying, two heat races, and a qualifier. Friday night qualifier would take the top 10 point earners and give them a shot to run top 4 and advance directly into Saturday’s 40-lap championship crowing main event.

It all began Friday night, which last year Salmon took the victory. This year there would be no Friday main event and it all began with qualifying where Salmon clocked the 6th fastest time of the night. She then went out for her first heat race and scored a third place finish. The second heat race of the night she came away with second after two fierce battles with teammate Tyler Tj Smith. She would advance to the Friday night qualifier with a chance to earn top four and lock into Saturday’s main event, but as luck would have it, she would be unable to earn the spot.

It was no doing of her own, however.

Traffic for bottled up in turns one and two and driver Jake Hagopian found himself in trouble right in front of Salmon and she had no where to go. She tried to wow up her number 21 and avoid trouble but ended up making hard contact with Hagopian. The section of the car she hit left her more concerned wit Hagopian being okay rather than the finish of the race. Thankfully Jake was fine. However the same could not be said about his car. Both would make necessary repairs and return for Saturday night.

The Saturday qualifier went much better for Salmon. She locked herself into the main event with a 2nd place finish. From there the one opportunity to win the California Cup title and $2000 was all that remained. The track continued the theme of the weekend being heavy and hooked up. Salmon watched her teammate charge through the field to earn hard charger while she moved up to 6th.

That’s all she wrote. After Saturday’s main event at Lemoore Raceway the 2018 season on the 1/5th Mile had reached its conclusion. Salmon walks away from 2018 as Lemoore’s runner up in points as well as a three time winner. The season isn’t over for Salmon quite yet however as she still has a few more chances at victory.
