Piantanida set to Make Non Wing Debut

Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. DISCOVERY BAY, Ca. (October 19, 2018) Tommie Piantanida is set to make her non wing 600 debut this weekend at Dixon Speedway.

After only a little less year behind the wheel Tommie Piantanida is making a big leap this weekend. She has ran the entire year in the Restricted class but this weekend the restrictor plate is coming out and the wings are coming off.

At the age of 17 and now with some experience under her belt, her father Pete feels the time is right and Tommie is ready. This weekend will also be her first time back behind the wheel since her first flip at Delta. According to her father she’s not scared at all and ready to get back on the horse. As a matter of fact her biggest concern after her roll-over a few weeks back was if someone captured the moment on video. No such video has been discovered but pictures do say 1000 words.

“I knew she was okay when I got to the car,” said Pete. “She didn’t have that lost look in her eyes and when she asked if the car was good enough to race next weekend I knew she was okay.”

Unfortunately the Piantanida’s didn’t make it to the California Cup but that allowed for some more time to get the necessary repairs dialed in. With the restrictor plates out, the wings off, and a fresh new perspective, Tommie Piantanida is wheeling a whole new chariot.

Also worth mentioning that is in the time since her last race she has also relocated to live with her father full time and concentrate on the racing effort. She returns to the race track this weekend at Dixon Speedway to shake down the non wing ride and she how she fares.

As of right now the Piantanida’s are unsure which direction they will move toward in 2019. For Pete, Super 600 sounds like the way to go, but for Tommie, she’s going to see how well she adapts to wingless. One thing is for certain, however, they are officially moving out of the Restricted class.
