(Image by mm racing photos)Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusives. TULARE, Ca. (October 20, 2018) – The Steel City Outlaw comes into the final night of the 25th Annual Trophy Cup at Thunderbowl Raceway sitting in prime position to capture the crown.
After two nights of racing, a quick time effort Thursday, and a runner up finish Friday Night Tim Shaffer comes into the finale sitting 6th in points. Taking his Friday score into tonight’s program Shaffer sits just five points out of the lead with 270 to Dominic Scelzi’s 275.
Friday night saw Shaffer qualify 12th quick in Group B. He followed that up with 2nd in his heat and another direct transfer into the main event.
Shaffer rolled off from the third position in Friday’s main event. Clyde Lamar’s famed 3c jumped to the early lead and looked dominant during the early stages of the race. But on lap 11 he met his demise spinning all by himself. Dennis Roth’s 83 of Hirst would take command with Shaffer in second.
Following a red flag the race went back to green and Shaffer made the move on Hirst. As he took over the lead the yellow flag came out and negated his effort. Hirst then found his own trouble on a restart and made his exit from the race.
That left the two former World of Outlaws standouts of Tim Shaffer and Jac Haudenshield all by themselves to duke it out for the victory. Shaffer held Haudenshield at bay for a while but Haud eventually made the pass stick and drove his way to victory. Shaffer came away with a podium finish however and put himself in solid contention for victory Saturday night.
As we mentioned before Shaffer has made a game this season of taking the big money races. He finds himself in contention to, once again, capture a $25,000 prize and become the winner of the Silver Anniversary winner of California’s crown jewel. The format for doing so is a little bit different however, and you don’t even have to win, just earn the most points.
The Saturday Format here at the trophy cup starts with D mains. Then the top 48 cars in points advance to heat races. The highest point driver in each heat will start in the back. As aforementioned this format is set to resemble an old Super Modified format, every race is full invert. Highest totaled points drivers will start in the back of their heat and race to accumulate the most points. Heat races pay 36 points to win and subtract by three for every position there after, so second would receive 33, third 30, and so on.
Following heat races the main events will be lined up by total points. First through twentieth lock directly into the main. In the main event the highest earning point drivers will once again be fully inverted 1st through 20th, followed by the four transfers out of the B.
Tonight’s Trophy Cup finale will be going 50 laps with an open red in the middle. The winner is awarded 150 points and minus three on after.
THE WINNER OF TROPHY CUP IS THE HIGHEST POINT EARNER, Not the main event winner.
With points so close heading into tonight’s finale there are many drivers still more than alive. Anything can happen here on the final night and recent history says it just might.
