Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. BAKERSFIELD, Ca (November 3, 2018) – It’s only been two-thousand, five-hundred, and fifty-seven days since October 15, 2011, but who’s counting?
Aside from a couple of one off attempts that non wing rendition of Kings Speedways famed Cotton Classic was the last time Tyler Tj Smith contested as a full time USAC West Coast Sprint Car pilot.
It may not be a full fledged USAC sanctioned race, but they day has finally come. The day Tj Smith has been waiting on for over 2,500 different 24 hour cycles.
Today is the day Tj Smith returns to the seat of a sprint car at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Ca. Thanks to Jayson May and his desire to give someone a chance, or in this case, perhaps a second chance, Smith was the perfect fit.
Back in 2009 as a young 19-year old Smith burst on to the California non-wing sprint car scene as a contender nearly out of the gate. His 2010 season became one of the best, and most memorable of his career. He won 4 shows and the Santa Maria Speedway track Championship beating guys like Craig Stitham and Peter Murphy in route to doing so. Adding to the allure of his illustrious short sprint Car career, three of those victories came in a row. He won at Kings Speedway on August 21. He then followed that up with a win at Santa Maria on the 28th, and then triumphed once more at the Jim Turner Memorial on September 11, 2010 to round it all out.
Tj Smith still sits high on the USAC West Coast Sprint Car stat sheet. He sits 7th overall in most quick times with 6, and 13th overall in career wins with 4. After the 2011 season things didn’t work out, and he re-positioned himself back down to the micro sprint ranks. But this is only where Tj Smith’s story truly begins.
In the time since Smith has scaled back his full-sized Sprint Car operations, he’s spent some time perfecting his craft in the 600 divisions. Between 2013 to present, Tj Smith is unquestionably one of the most decorated Micro Sprint racers in history. Thanks to long time friends and now current employers, the Salmon family, and Salmon Motorsports has given Smith quite the avenue to strut his dominance. Or in truth, just the opportunity to do what he loves, – race!
Tj Smith would Race anything. Whether it was a soap box, shopping cart, or sprint car, Tj only knows one way – wide open and out front.
In his time in the Micro Sprint he has won a staggering three of the only four California Speedweek titles to have ever occurred. He has multiple podiums at the Clay Cup Nationals, multiple 25-win seasons, and now a clean sweep of every championship he entered to his credit.
Although the Micro Sprint scene has given Smith the platform to showcase superiority; ever since he left the seat of a sprint car he’s wanted nothing more than to get back in one. Twenty-five wins, and five major titles, in one short season later – and the opportunity has finally risen.
You could feed Tj all the cliches in the book right now and he would not only agree with you, but probably convince you that they too, are all true. “Good things come to those who wait.” If you put in the work things just fall into place. It may have been 7 years of separation from his long lost calling, but the time is up.
Its time to wait for karma no more. Opportunity knocks, now we all sit to and wait to see, who opens the door.
Today’s the day.
