Moles Drops New Plaza Park Track Record
Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca. (November 19, 2018) – Mitchel Moles turned in a new Plaza Park single lap track record Friday night with a staggering 10.112 lap time in Super 600 qualifying.
Only on hand for one of the two nights of racing for Turkey Night at Plaza, Mitchel Moles made his trip to Keller Auto Raceway well worth it. Although he didn’t land on the top step of the podium he broke a record that had stood for seven years.
Friday night also served as Moles debut in his TEN-J Non Wing Car. Speaking with Moles before the event it was evident he was very excited to get behind the wheel of two different cars in a double duty attempt. As stated in the pre race report Moles is ordinarily a non-wing ringer with a lot of success at Plaza this season. However low and behold he goes out and drops a track record with the wing on.
His super 600 track record in qualifying showed everyone how fast the track was and that starting near the front would be imperative. After dropping a new track record Moles was only able to hold on for third in his heat. Every year at this time of the year, Low temperatures, with moisture in the air, draws the most horsepower out of the cars, but also makes conditions of the track predictably heavy.
In his non wing attempt Moles qualified with 5th and won his heat. By the standard Moles has for himself his 10th place main event finish would be considered sub-par, but he’s just glad to have got some laps in it and now he’s set to go after a Driller in January.
On to the class where Moles was a clear favorite to win – Super 600. The main event went green as Moles chased down TEN-J teammate Ben Worth. The two of them seemed to be the class of the field before they were joined with company. Young prodigy Corey Day made moves and turned the battle into a three way barn-burner.
Moles had a chance for victory as he made big moves late. He sized up the leader and went for the strike. As the white flag came out it was clearly time for Moles to execute his pass. However there was a hole in turn one everyone worked on avoiding all night long. Day turned down to miss the home and Moles had to back off and caused him to bobble.
That sealed the deal for Mitchel Moles.
Right there his teammate got back around him as well and Mitchel Moles would have to settle for the third position in his final race before Tulsa. The next time Mitchel Moles straps into a car it will be inside of the Tulsa Expo Center in January as he contested for the coveted Golden Driller in four classes.
