Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca. (November 20, 2018) -Mattix Salmon quietly put together a great weekend last time he visited Plaza, this time he broke the door down, and let everyone know he meant business.
It may have gone largely unnoticed with all the festivities surrounding the Mark Hagopian Memorial but Mattix Salmon drove his way to a pair of top tens that built a solid foundation to stand on coming into Turkey Night at Plaza Park. As stated in the pre race report Salmon has been showing vast amounts of improvement with every lap in the car. His ability to control the car and have more fun as the track conditions turn more technical show clearly that the capability is there.
Salmon has long had a corner of believers and individuals who recognized his abilities, but he had yet to fully show them off to the public as a whole. Last weekend he finally broke that barrier, and showed the public at large that within no time at all, the number 5 will be considered a favorite anywhere he shows up.
Because this weekend at Plaza not only did he show up, he showed out!
Friday night qualifying on the hooked up track ended up 12th. It was Respectable but everyone was looking for more. Mattix gave more all night. He grabbed third in his heat and then took his confidence to the main where he narrowly lost out on a top 5. Salmon brought the car home Sixth. His sixth on night one was again in quiet fashion, but it would be the last time.
Saturday night Salmon came primed and prepped to shine.
Qualifying came out and Mattix dropped everyone’s jaws for the first time on the night. The young man who gets to drive half as much as many racers, but has twice as much charisma, and desire, dropped the hammer and laid down the law. He put the 5 up to the runner up spot on the board where it stuck.
He continued to shine during his heat race when he brought home another runner up finish. Things were looking bright heading into the feature.
Bright they were. Salmon scratched, and clawed, and held his ground en route to bringing home a solid, and not so quiet top
Five finish. It’s safe to say Salmon has arrived as a contender among the California Restricted ranks going forward.
Salmon has showcased everything it takes to reach that final step on the ladder. He’s minimized his mistakes, improved his qualifying results, and quietly showed improvement with every passing lap.
Look for the 5 out front at a track near you on 2019. The time for flying under the radar has passed and the time to shine has arrived.
