Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Ca. (December 17, 2018) — Mattix Salmon put up some of his best numbers in 2018.
Highlighted by his career best finish of 2nd on June 16th in Delta, Salmon scored a pair of top 5 finishes, and landed 13 top 10 finishes in his 27 races on the season.
Mattix Salmon surely passed the eye test as the season made its way down to the wire. Many nights saw Salmon make a charge forward. His overall results are not completely indicative on his improvements on performance this year. Salmon turned a real corner on becoming a threat to run up at the front, and even win. The amount of car control that he has showcased over the last season has improved immensely.
According to Salmon he has much more fun out there running on the ragged edge. Many heat race battles saw Mattix go wheel to wheel with friends of his and neither one would give an inch. Although racing at such close quarters made his father nervous, the attitude the Mattix brought back after the race would make him proud. Mattix was never nervous to go out there and show a wheel, in fact, as stated, running the edge is where his confidence lies.
One summer night in 2018 offered a glimpse of what is to come with Salmon. His charge up to second place at Delta Speedway on night two of the Summer Sizzle was the best result of his Super 600 career. Every person in the pits or listening back home couldn’t have been prouder of Mattix. He really showed what is to come in the very near future. This 7th grade “horse rider,” will be in the winners circle before long, and who knows what happens to the flood gates after picking up the first one.
The very next time Salmon showed up at Delta Speedway was for Speedweek and his 7th place performance on that night may have been as impressive as any. With drivers from all
Over the nation on hand, and everyone vying for those coveted California Bears, Mattix ran well inside the top 10, and did so impressively. He followed that night up with another Speedweek top 10 at Plaza just two short days later.
Mattix also showed some serious might at the Mark Hagopian Memorial this year. In not one, but two nights in a row, Mattix charged into the top 10 from deep in the field. Additionally Salmon turned in the second quickest lap of the night at Plaza for Turkey Night just a couple of months later. He ended up finishing fifth on the night to round out his 2018 campaign on the gas pedal. Things are sure looking bright for Salmon as he brings this momentum with him into 2019 and beyond.
As of right now Salmon is signed up for the 34th Annual Tulsa Shootout but it is unclear if the young man will be making the journey.
