Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. FRESNO, Calif. (February 21, 2019) >> Four-time USAC West Coast Sprint Car series main event winner, Tj Smith, is set to return to the series for the first time since 2012 aboard the May Motorsports, number 8m Maxim.

Next weeks, season opening, FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway serves as Smith’s first run in a USAC sanctioned Sprint Car race in over five seasons. Although Smith boasts a respectable stat sheet in the USAC West archives, limited resources forced the 2010 Santa Maria Speedway track champion to move back to the Micro Sprint level.

Since then, however, Smith has become one of the most decorated Micro Sprint racers in California history. Having earned at-least one title, in every season he’s competed in, since 2013, he’s continued to keep his name in the conversation. After a 2018 season sweep, marked by 25 wins, and 5 titles, Smith went from in-the -conversation, to back in the seat.

“After racing against T.J, I already knew he was a great driver back then,” said car co-owner, Jayson May. “When my son got into micros and I saw him again I was massively impressed. He had time to hone in on those skills he was already good at, and he looked to have them mastered.”

According to May, when he and his father, Car Owner, Winfield May, got the itch to go racing again, Smith was the first one who came to mind. With his frequent displays of dominance on the micro circuit, he looked to be the perfect candidate for driving duties.

“We wanted to put someone young and in need of an opportunity in the car,” said May. “I remember he won his last three races in a row before his operation ceased. I knew it couldn’t have been related to performance. He’d always been a respectable, and good kid to me as well.”

Ever since his last race as a full time USAC West competitor, Smith has longed to get back on the circuit. His desire to race has never wavered, as is obvious, judging by his Micro Sprint result. Now the opportunity has presented itself.

“I absolutely cannot thank the May family, and everyone who has come on board to support me, enough,” said Smith. “I’m very excited about this opportunity and I just want to go out and make them proud.”

Last season, during one of his most dominant stretches, the phone rang. On the other end was Jayson May and the opportunity was born. Everyone involved was able to keep their lips sealed as Tj wrapped up the task at hand.

Following one of his most memorable performances ever, at Delta Speedway’s Turkey Bowl, news broke that Smith would be back behind the wheel of a Sprint Car the following weekend. The opportunity was for a “try out” of sorts, during a one-off ride at Kern County Raceway Park’s inaugural non-wing show. Despite not being in a sprint car for as long as he had, Smith found comfort early, and drove his way to an impressive top 5 result.

“It was obvious he was being careful at first, but when he dropped the hammer, it was clear he could still do it,” said Jayson May. “We are excited to see what this season brings and we know he has everything it takes to be successful.”

The team has committed to the first four USAC West Coast Sprint Car races for certain, but the goal is to run the entire season.

May Motorsports will be on hand for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Tj Smith at the helm.

Tj Smith’s second coming starts Wednesday.

The wait is over.
