Connor Danell Impresses in Sprint Car Debut

Sprint Car Insider- Driver Exclusive. HANFORD, Calif. (February 25, 2019) > Connor Danell opened eyes in his Western Racesaver 305 debut.

Being the first time he ever sat in a sprint car with the power to the ground Connor Danell handled the task masterfully. In each event on track, Danell pushed forward, and charged in every race. The goal for the weekend was to just complete laps, and gain some seat time.

Highlighted by his charge from 8th to 4th in the main event, and comfort level already sustained, it’s safe to say Danell blew the goal out of the water. At the end of 25 laps Danell brought home the Pennzoil, Van de Pol Petroleum, #5D home with a solid 6th place.

The evening started with Danell qualifying 6th fastest in the overall Western racesaver field. The Qualifying effort is just for confidence for the young rookie, because no matter how well he qualifies, being a rookie means he will start the heat from the back of the field.

As the Western Racesaver heat Race rolled out onto the track Danell would start from the tail end of the field. However, if it was confidence he sought, he sure found and seized in the heat. Danell marched forward from the drop of the flag and never looked back. When the checkered flag waved it was 3rd on the board for the driver of the 5D.

By this point Danell was already driving to an impressive debut but his new found confidence carried with him into the main event. Danell rolled off for the 25-lapper from the 8th position. With the list of drivers ahead of him lathered with names he’s raced against most of his life, or watched his brother race, it would have been understandable to be nervous. But such was not the case for young Danell.

Connor Danell put himself in the thick of the mix from the get-go. He drove with aggression and precision the whole time. Judging by the body English alone inside of the cockpit, his confidence was growing with each passing lap. Danell got as far up as 4th on the board during his charge to the front. It looked as if the rookie might nab a top 5 finish. He drove with the conviction that says top 5s’, and better, certainly lie ahead in his future, but night one of the 2019 Western Racesaver series would add Connor Danell to 6th place in the History books.

Now his Sprint Car debut has come and gone taking the fear of the unknown with it. Now Danell has perspective as to where he belongs in the field. From this point forward, as long as he continues to believe in his abilities, the 5D should continue to show progression.

However his spectacular finish isn’t making his father lose perspective.

“He did great, but I don’t wanna put too much pressure on him,” said Justin Danell. “This season really is just about putting in laps, and gaining seat time. I just want him to know he has nothing to prove, just to bring the car and himself home safe, and what’s meant to will fall into place.”

Danell will be back behind the wheel
