Fire is Back in Barnes Ahead of MHM19
Prodigy Race Promotions on Sprint Car Insider. Driver Exclusive-VISALIA, Calif. (September 17, 2019) -> Jett Barnes picked up his 16th Jr Sprint victory of the season Saturday night at Delta Speedway.
Despite being the winningest driver in the class, Barnes endured nearly a full month without visiting victory lane. After making the highly scrutinized mid-season manufacturer change the learning curve proved to be steep for Barnes, and the team, but they kept at it, and persevered.
After picking up his first win with the D1 family back at Lemoore the previous weekend it was apparent Barnes had his confidence back. Right out of the trailer Saturday night he was fast. He charged through the pack picking up six spots to go from 7th to 2nd in his first heat race.
In his second heat race he started at the point and went wire-to-wire. Coming into the nights main event Barnes would start the 20-lap feature from the outside of row one. Once the race went green he filed into the runner-up spot for half the race. Once he did get his way to the top spot, he made wise decisions throughout the remainder and went the distance. He managed his lead, and the field with perfection. Although lap times were close his race craft brought him across the line with a 1.72 second advantage.
Saturday night was Barnes 16th win in only 33 total features. Although he had a hiatus from victory, he still nearly has a .500 average. Along with 16 wins he now has 24 podiums, 29 top fives, and a perfect 33 for 33 inside of the top ten. Barnes recapturing his early season flow couldn’t come at a more welcoming time either…
According to the team, they finally have it figured out. They finally have it dialed, and it’s at the perfect time.
This weekend Barnes will come into the third running of the Mark Hagopian Memorial as a member of the D1/Driven family for the first time. The event has already taken the region, and industry as a whole by storm, but for the Driven Family it means even more. This race honors the foundation that they’re all standing on today. It celebrates the legacy Hagopian left behind for everyone in the sport and the impact he left on more than Driven/D1 alone.
Last year won three heat races during the two night affair with the old format. He finished 2nd on night one and 5th on night two. In 2019 Barnes will be satisfied with no less than walking away as the #MHM19 champion and possibly the Keller Auto Raceway champion. Barnes still has an outside shot of overtaking the top of the Jr Sprint standings facing a 91 point deficit.
However on the horizon further is the title the team has within their clutches – Lemoore. Time is winding down at Lemoore as well and Barnes now needs to maintain a 33 point margin as opposed to the 13 it had been closed down to prior to last race.
The team is starting to breathe a sigh of relief as things are starting to come together. But they won’t breathe comfortably yet, because promise doesn’t hand out trophies, – performance does.
