Prodigy Race Promotions on Sprint Car Insider – Driver Exclusive. ELK GROVE, Calif. (May 25, 2020) – > Devon Courtnier drove the 34 to victory for the first time in the Super 600 class Sunday night at Dixon Speedway in just his third start of the season.
To this point in the season Courtnier boasts three top ten finishes, two heat race victories and now a main event victory to top it all off. Just two weeks prior to Dixon’s Memorial Day doubleheader Courtnier was able to earn his first heat race victory and an eighth place finish in the main event to start off his rookie Super 600 campaign. Coming into last weekends Saturday and Sunday night showdown Courtnier had shown the speed to be a contender but by Sunday night he would elevate his game to yet another level entirely.
The weekends events started out on Saturday night with qualifying. For the second strait race he brought the 34 home with sixth quick. In his heat race he started third and moved up into second making his first dash of the season. After a sixth place finish in the dash he started the feature from outside the third row and looked for an opportunity to earn a top five finish. In the 25-lap feature Courtnier stayed right where he started to earn a sixth place finish and second consecutive top ten finish to begin the season.
Sunday night is when big things began to take shape.
The night started a bit slower with a season low ninth place qualifying effort but it would in no way be inductive of how the rest of the night would play out.
Starting on the outside of the front row of his heat he was able to make the move into the number one spot and hold it. Sunday nights heat victory was already his second of the season. In the dash he started third and once again moved up to eventually finish second and earn the outside front row starting position for the Sunday night 25-lap feature.
Sunday nights feature was dubbed as the “most competitive race all weekend,” and the 34 was right in the thick of it.
After starting on the outside of the front row he found himself in hot pursuit of the leader early. He stalked the leader for the first 11 laps before pulling the trigger in traffic on lap 12. After a caution he maintained the advantage before nearly colliding with a lapped driver in the late stages of the race.
With only a handful of laps remaining a daunting caution would draw the nerves out of anyone watching as the driver he had to beat is known for making aggressive moves and making them stick. As the green flag waved Courtnier held his ground as second went in for the haymaker. He was able to come off the corner with the advantage and show the rest of the field the way to his first career super 600 checkered flag.
It took only three races for Devon Courtnier to find his way to victory lane in Super 600 competition. A hard fought victory for the 34 can feel especially rewarding knowing that most of the stiffest competition in the state has been on hand considering there isn’t many other places to race.
Moving forward the 34 has now established himself as a top flight driver in Super 600 competition. They say the first one is the hardest. Now that Devon Courtnier has that one out of the way it may just open the flood gates as hell return to the seat with a well earned renewed sense of confidence. Racing returns to Dixon on June 6th and the 34 will be in action in search of his second consecutive victory.
