Canales Racing and Colby Copeland open campaign at Marysville Raceway on Memorial Day
By Gary Thomas
Marysville, CA – May 27, 2020…Kicking-off their season at Marysville Raceway on Monday night Canales Racing and driver Colby Copeland had their sights set on a solid outing, until a lap-nine issue relegated them to a 13th place finish in the feature.
The Memorial Day showcase was billed as the “Yuba River Gold Rush” and marked the third consecutive race at the track that has been held without fans in the stands.
A solid field of 45-cars were on hand for the special event that was shown to a worldwide audience on Speed Shift TV. Copeland opened the night by qualifying fifth overall in the first flight of time-trials aboard the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance machine. He then started on the outside of the front row in his heat race and immediately took command at the waving of the green flag.
The Roseville, California competitor drove away from the field to claim victory and lock up a place in the main event redraw, where he ultimately pulled the four pill. Starting outside the second row Copeland got even with Andy Forsberg for second on the opening circuit, before settling into fourth while trying a higher line than most in the early stages. He ran there until getting into a spin on lap-nine, forcing him to the rear of the field.
Restarting at the tail Copeland then worked his way back to 13th over the remaining laps in the feature.
“The 5C had great speed all night long on Monday and was fun to drive,” he commented. “It was a technical track and I was trying to find something up top early on, but lost traction in the second corner and unfortunately killed the engine. I am looking forward to the next race, whenever that may be for us.”
Copeland and the No. 5C team had planned to tackle both the King of the West-NARC and Sprint Car Challenge Tour schedules this season, but each series has been shelved for the time being due to Covid-19. Upcoming events are still to be determined and will be announced when available.
Canales Racing and Colby Copeland would like to thank Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes, Eagle Companies Inc., Geico Insurance, American River Overhead Door Inc., FVP, NOS Energy Drink, Northstar Concrete Pumping, Borello Race Engines, Performance Powder Coating and Sandblasting, Les Schwab Tires of Antelope, Bianchi Farms, Vanlare Steering Repair, A.R.T. Enterprises, Tognottis and Konnected Clothing for their support this season.
