Prodigy Race Promotions on Sprint Car Insider. Driver Exclusive- Rancho Murieta, Calif. (May 26, 2020) -> Lucas Mauldin marched into victory lane for the first time in 2020 Saturday night at Dixon Speedway.
Following the Covid-19 hiatus and more than two full months off, Lucas Mauldin made it to the winners circle in just his third race of the season. Now that he’s found familiar territory inside of victory lane Lucas Mauldin can officially begin his quest to top the 12 wins he earned in 2019.
Saturday’s win also accounts for Mauldin’s third consecutive podium to start the season. The only other races under his belt going into Saturday was the Outlaw Nationals at Plaza Park back at the beginning of March. That weekend Maudlin was shut out of victory lane despite battling hard for the victory and coming home with a pair of runner ups. Saturday night at Dixon, after two and half months of thinking about it, Mauldin was not going to be denied.
Things kicked off Saturday night with qualifying for the Jr Sprint class with qualifying. An astounding 17 car field of highlighted the Jr Sprint class over the weekend. After hitting the track eighth on the list, Mauldin mustered up 7th quick on the charts. A Seventh quick for Mauldin may have given the impression there was some rust to knock off but after the heat race those questions would be vindicated.
He was able to start from the point and put the field behind him in a cloud of dust. The 55x was right back to his winning ways when he captured his second heat race victory of the season. His win was another statement as he dropped the field and eliminated any questions left after qualifying.
Going into the dash Mauldin started from the outside of row three, the sixth position. In the short sprint Mauldin drove through two cars to claim the fourth position. His heat performance landed him the fourth starting spot in Saturday nights 20-lap main event at Dixon Speedway.
The main event was a battle. Mauldin was able to climb through the three drivers ahead of him but it was a battle. He was able to get into the top spot and utilize his superior race craft to wheel to the checkers first. At the end of 20-laps Lucas Mauldin topped the field to earn his first victory of the 2020 season. A 1.023 second gap over the runner up finisher spoke volumes about the crafty nature of the 55x as the lap times saw Mauldin turn in the second fastest time of the feature. However when it comes to wins and loses all that matters is who crosses the line first. On Saturday night at Dixon, that was the 55x of Lucas Mauldin.
The quest to capture more than a dozen checkered flags is officially underway. Mauldin is a winner in 2020 and that may spell trouble for the field. Last year when he got the momentum rolling it was tough to stop. News continues to drop daily about the remaining tracks in California opening up but one thing is certain, Dixon Speedway will once again drop the green flag on June 6th. Look for an announcement to see if the 55x will be on hand to contest for the victory.
