Colby Copeland brings home runner up finish in a stacked opener at Placerville Speedway
By Gary Thomas
Placerville, CA – June 16, 2020…Making their second start of the season Canales Racing and Colby Copeland put together an impressive night at Placerville Speedway on Saturday, capping it off with a final corner pass to claim a runner up finish in the feature.
Opening night at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds bullring brought out a stellar 46-car field of Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Copeland began the night by setting fast time in flight A of qualifying. He then claimed a third place finish in the opening heat race, before running fifth in the Dash, which placed the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C on the inside of row three for the feature.
At the waving of the green flag in the 30-lapper Copeland slotted himself into fifth and moved up to fourth when another car had an issue after a handful of laps. The 26-year-old then carved his way into third by the time a caution came out on lap 10. On the restart he was able to get side-by-side with Ryan Robinson for the runner up spot and the duo proceeded to battle hard, prior to Copeland assuming the position with 13-laps complete.
The remaining distance saw Copeland continue to navigate the famed Placerville cushion and eventually lose second to Michael Faccinto as the laps wound down. The Roseville, Calif competitor took advantage of a late restart however, and executed an impressive move up high off the final corner to snag the runner up spot from Faccinto at the checkered.
“It was definitely a great night for the whole team at Placerville Speedway on Saturday,” Copeland commented. “Trevor Canales gave me a great race car to drive and it felt good to put together a solid night in our second start this season. The new car is working well and we are learning more about it every time we hit the track. I want to give a big thanks to all our partners for making it possible. To bring home a runner up finish in a field like that is pretty gratifying.”
Next up for Canales Racing will be a trip south to the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford for the long-awaited King of the West-NARC 410 Sprint Car Series opener. The team will field a pair of cars with Copeland piloting the No. 5C mount and Trent Canales behind the wheel of the No. 5T machine. Copeland earned a third place finish in Sprint Car Challenge Tour competition at Keller Auto Speedway two years ago and hopes to put together a solid night at the “King of the Dirt Tracks.”
“We’re looking forward to bringing a pair of cars to Hanford this Saturday,” said Copeland. “I’m really excited to finally get the KWS-NARC 410 season underway at Keller Auto Speedway. Peter Murphy has put in a lot of work there since he took the track over and we can’t wait to check it. Things are definitely looking up in California with more and more venues opening, which is a great thing.”
