Colby Copeland and Canales Racing record eighth place finish at KWS-NARC opener in Hanford
By Gary Thomas
Hanford, CA – June 22, 2020…Canales Racing ventured south to tackle the King of the West-NARC 410 Sprint Car season opener at Keller Auto Speedway this past Saturday and ultimately saw it capped off with an eighth place finish for driver Colby Copeland.
The Roseville, California based team brought out a pair of entries as the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu 410 Sprint Car Series launched its 2020 campaign. Copeland was fresh off a runner up the previous weekend and opened the night in Hanford by clocking the 10th fastest lap among the 29 competitors. A third place finish in the heat race then transferred him into the feature, where he started from the outside of the sixth row.
The 26-year-old held position through a couple of caution periods, before the final 19-laps were clicked off without incident. He was able to move forward and tally an eighth place result at the Ed Entz checkered flag aboard the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C machine.
“It was an okay night for us in Hanford on Saturday,” Copeland summed up. “We went out late in qualifying and timed in 10th quick. On the start of our heat I made a mistake and dropped to third after being on the front row. Lining up mid-pack in the main event we then tried some things with the car but couldn’t quite get around the curb as well as I wanted to. We did get up to eighth though, so all in all it was decent. We will use the night as a learning experience and move on to Placerville for two nights of racing next week.”
Trent Canales also made his second start of the season during the event on Saturday at the Kings County Fairgrounds venue. It was his initial time competing with a 410 powerplant under the hood and his first career start at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford. Canales qualified 25th, ran seventh in his heat race and very nearly transferred out of the B-main, coming up just one spot short.
Up next for Canales Racing will be the fourth annual “Nor*Cal Posse Shootout” at the Placerville Speedway this Friday and Saturday. Both Copeland and Canales will be taking part in the Winged 360 Sprint Car double header.
