Mauldin Picks up Where he Left off at Delta

Prodigy Race Promotions on Sprint Car Insider. Driver Exclusive- Rancho Murieta, Calif. (June 22, 2020) -> Lucas Mauldin kicked off his defense of the Delta Speedway Jr Sprint Championship by capturing his second win of 2020 while accomplishing the one thing that eluded him in 2019.

Mauldin finally began his title defense of the Delta Speedway Jr Sprint track championship on the right foot by capturing the Summer Sizzle title Saturday night. In addition to finding his familiar territory in victory lane at Delta Speedway it was sixth consecutive podium finish to start of the belated 2020 race season.

The ironic part of Saturday nights victory on night number two of the Summer Sizzle is that it was coincidentally the anniversary of Mauldin’s worst overall finish at Delta Speedway in 2019. On his way to eight wins, 11 podium finishes, and a second place average in 2019, Lucas Mauldin brought in a season-low 8th place on the second night of the sizzle last year. He also won a race at Delta in every month they held a race except the month of June. So right out of the box Mauldin not only got his defense of the title rolling successfully, he checked the only two boxes left open from last season.

The two night affair wasn’t perfect, but Mauldin’s team was able to find speed from night one to night two and make championship level adjustments. Scott Mauldin attributes a lot of their ability to adapt to the close relationship with engine builder, Kent at SRD Engines. The combination was able to give the 55x the speed he needed to end the weekend in victory lane.

Night one started with second in the first heat while also timing in second on the lap charts. The second heat saw a bit of a struggle as Mauldin started seventh and only made it one position through the field and timed in fifth quick on the lap charts. Scratching their heads the team sent the 55x to start fourth in the very first Jr Sprint feature of the season at Delta. His crafty race IQ and championship level confidence carried him to his fifth consecutive podium of the season as he crossed the line second while only being the fourth fastest car on track.

According to the team they were just trying new things and searching for what would work. Low and behold, Saturday night they found it.

Right out of the gate Saturday the difference was evident. Mauldin charged three spots to climb from Fifth to second in his heat. The next heat he stayed at the front of the pack as well by starting and finishing in the second spot. As the sun set on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds and the second night of the 2020 opening weekends Summer Sizzle the defending champion was tabbed to start P1 for the final Jr Sprint feature of the weekend.

That’s all she wrote for the Jr Sprint class.

Lucas Mauldin had all the speed he needed when he needed it most. He took the 55x to its familiar space in victory lane and did so convincingly. In this one not only was he the first across the line, but he was also the fastest on the charts for the first time all weekend. Saturday’s win was his second of 2020 but it was oh so familiar.

Following Saturday nights win Lucas Mauldin boasts an impressive two wins, and six strait podiums to start 2020. Now the quest to top 12 overall wins, and 8 wins at Delta Speedway has officially begun. The 2019 Delta Speedway Jr Sprint Champion has his eyes on the prize.
