Colby Copeland and Canales Racing put together strong weekend at the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – June 29, 2020…The Nor*Cal Posse Shootout presented the most lucrative Winged 360 Sprint Car event since action returned in California and Canales Racing driver Colby Copeland did not disappoint, claiming back-to-back runner up finishes at the Placerville Speedway two-step.

The Canales Racing team once again brought out a pair of cars this past weekend, with both Copeland and Trent Canales taking on the double-header. “We had a great time at Placerville Speedway and you could definitely chalk it up as a successful outing for the both of us,” Copeland commented. “It was nice to have a couple of nights at the same track and to continue running well there feels really good.”

Copeland kicked-off the event in strong fashion on Friday by qualifying third in his group, before winning his heat race and then running second in the Dash. It placed the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C on the front row of the feature alongside Willie Croft. At the waving of the Ron Stahl green flag he jumped into the lead and held command through several caution periods early on.

On lap 12 he would lose the lead to Shane Golobic and then get locked in a good battle with Sean Becker, who eventually took over the top-spot with three laps to go. Copeland spent the closing laps going to work on Golobic for the second position and proceeded to make a great move with two circuits left to snag the runner up spot that he did not relinquish.

Coming back on Saturday the 26-year-old continued to show speed aboard the Trevor Canales wrenched machine by qualifying second in his group and then bringing home a third place effort in his heat. Starting 12th on the grid in the 40-lap finale he methodically worked his way towards the front. With cars racing high and low Copeland positioned himself in fourth during a green-white-checkered restart. When things got back underway he blasted to the high-side, driving by Blake Carrick and Andy Forsberg, before setting his sights on leader Shane Golobic.

Copeland closed in and gave it one final shot on the final corner, but came up just short, settling for his third consecutive runner up finish to open the Placerville Speedway season. “We obviously want to win one of these races but to finish second in three straight events is nothing to hang your head at,” said Copeland on the front stretch. “We have new cars this season and Trevor is doing an amazing job with them, as he gets me more and more comfortable. We’ll take this momentum and hopefully improve one position on the Fourth of July here next week.”

Trent Canales also had a solid weekend at the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout by putting the No. 5T Sprint Car in the show both nights, which featured stout fields of 36 cars on Friday and 38 entrants on Saturday. He qualified fourth and third in his group each night respectively and did an impressive job his heat race to transfer directly out both nights. He crossed the stripe in 17th during the opening night feature, before running 15th in the finale.

Canales Racing now returns to the Placerville bullring this Saturday July 4th for a special Independence Day showcase, where they will once again field a pair of cars.
