Sixth place run in Chico highlights weekend for Copeland and Canales Racing

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 28, 2020…Prior to hitting the road for the Midwest, Canales Racing competed in one more weekend of action at home this past Saturday and Sunday, which was highlighted by a sixth place finish at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

This past Sunday’s event marked the first show at the famed Silver Dollar Speedway quarter-mile since before the COVID-19 break and brought out a solid 39-car field of Winged 360 Sprint Cars. Copeland opened the night by timing-in 11th fastest, before winning his heat race aboard the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C.

Starting third in the feature he ran in that position for much of the race until venturing a little higher, attempting to move forward on a late restart. The 28-year-old looked to blast his way around the outside but dropped a couple spots and ultimately crossed the checkered flag in sixth.

The night before both Copeland and Trent Canales competed at the 15th annual Mark Forni Classic in Placerville. An equally as stout 45-car field was on hand for the show and Copeland kicked-it off by qualifying seventh in his group, before also finishing seventh in his heat race. After transferring out of the B-main the Roseville driver went on to run 16th in the feature.

Canales timed-in fifth among his group, finished seventh in the heat race and sixth in the B-main, narrowly missing out on a transfer spot.

Copeland and Canales Racing will now get ready for a big trip to the Midwest to compete in seven nights of racing in nine days. They will kick things off with the annual Knoxville 360 Nationals on August 7th and 8th, before taking on the Ultimate Challenge and Front Row Challenge in Oskaloosa on Sunday August 9th and Monday August 10th respectively.

The No. 5C team will then finish it all off back at the Knoxville Raceway for three nights of competition with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. The triple header will be capped by the annual Capitani Classic, which pays $50,000-to-win and $3,000-to-start the A-main.

“We look forward to heading to the Midwest and seeing where we stack up against some of the best competition in the country,” Copeland said. “Going back to Knoxville is always an opportunity to learn and grow as a team since we don’t have many half-mile tracks at home in California. I want to thank all of our partners for making it possible to make the trip back.”
