Colby Copeland and Canales Racing claim top-five finish at Ultimate Challenge in Oskaloosa

By Gary Thomas

Oskaloosa, Iowa – August 12, 2020…Kicking-off their Iowa adventure this past weekend Canales Racing and driver Colby Copeland put together a strong outing in Oskaloosa on Sunday night, which culminated in a top-five effort at the annual “Ultimate Challenge.”

Competing with Lucas Oil ASCS at Southern Iowa Speedway Copeland showed speed right off the bat driving from seventh to fourth in his heat race, before carving his way from fourth to second in the qualifier. It gave him enough points to earn an outside row two starting spot in the 25-lap finale on the blazing fast half-mile.

At the waving of the green flag the Roseville, California driver settled into fifth and ran there until the caution waved for Austin McCarl on lap seven, which bumped him up a spot for the restart. When going back green Copeland battled with fellow Californian Shane Golobic and when the checkered flag eventually waved, he would cross the stripe in fifth to cap off a solid night of racing. Finishing ahead of him were Brian Brown, Dominic Scelzi, Brock Zearfoss and Golobic.

“It felt really good to claim a top-five at the Ultimate Challenge in Oskaloosa last Sunday,” commented the 28-year-old. “Southern Iowa Speedway is a big half-mile and we hadn’t run on anything like that until this past Friday at Knoxville. To end up fifth in a 45-car field was solid for this entire team and I can’t thank Trevor Canales enough for giving me a great car. We’ll now turn our attention to the Knoxville Raceway this weekend.”

Copeland and Canales Racing will return to the “Sprint Car Capital of the World” this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series sanctioned “One and Only.” The three-night event at Knoxville Raceway culminates with the annual “Capitani Classic” on Saturday evening.
