Friday night heat race win highlights the One and Only weekend at Knoxville for Canales Racing
By Gary Thomas
Knoxville, Iowa – August 19, 2020…Roseville, California’s Colby Copeland and Canales Racing capped their Iowa trip this past weekend with the World of Outlaws sanctioned “One and Only” at Knoxville Raceway.
The ultra-tough three-night show brought many of the top Winged Sprint Car drivers in the country to the Sprint Car Capital of the World. The overall weekend highlight for Copeland and Canales Racing was a big heat race win on Friday night, which automatically locked them into the feature that evening.
“We had a great time in the Midwest and feel like we certainly learned a lot as a team,” said Copeland. “Winning the heat race over James McFadden on Friday at the One and Only was a big part of the weekend. As everybody knows, back home in California we don’t have tracks the size or configuration such as Knoxville, so each time we hit the speedway it is experience gained. It turned out to be a great event and the competition was second to none. Hopefully we can make it back for the 60th Knoxville Nationals next season.”
Opening night on Thursday brought out one of the strongest 67-car fields you will find anywhere. Copeland began it by qualifying 37th, before running eighth in his heat race. He went on to finish fifth in the C-main, missing the transfer by just one spot.
Coming back on Friday the 28-year-old found himself on the pole of the second heat race and did a phenomenal job to hold off Kasey Kahne Racing driver James McFadden, picking up the victory and locking himself into the main event. Attesting to the competition at the event, the top-five in the heat was rounded out by McFadden, Outlaw regular Carson Macedo, Pennsylvania standout Anthony Macri and future Knoxville Hall of Famer Brian Brown.
After finishing 24th in the feature Copeland came back to finish off the event on Saturday. He kicked-it off by starting and finishing ninth in the opening Qualifier, which placed him in the night’s C-main. The Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C started from the pole, battled for the lead and held strong in a transfer spot for much of the race.
Several caution periods slowed the contest however, and unfortunately for Copeland, he would slow to a stop after running out of fuel with two laps remaining, which put an end to the weekend. He was one of a couple drivers that had the same issue, including eventual C-main winner Donny Schatz as he crossed the checkered.
Canales Racing returns home to California this weekend and will see Trent Canales climb aboard the No. 5T Sprint Car to tackle Saturday’s 60th Johnny Key Classic at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville.
Canales Racing and the No. 5C of Colby Copeland would like to thank Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes, Eagle Companies Inc., Geico Insurance, American River Overhead Door Inc., FVP, NOS Energy Drink, Northstar Concrete Pumping, Borello Race Engines, Performance Powder Coating and Sandblasting, Les Schwab Tires of Antelope, Harley Davidson of Rocklin and Folsom, Bianchi Farms, Vanlare Steering Repair, A.R.T.
