Colby Copeland puts on the charge to tally runner up finish at the Tribute to Mac Tiner

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – October 6, 2020…Colby Copeland and Canales Racing have put together several impressive outings at Placerville Speedway this season and that continued this past Saturday, as they brought home a runner up finish in a stout 58-car field.

The “Tribute to Mac Tiner” showcased the largest Winged 360 Sprint Car purse of the season in California and Copeland’s charge from the 11th starting spot continued the strength he has shown at the quarter-mile all year. Among their six start starts at the facility in 2020, he and Canales Racing earned four runner up finishes and a victory during the special Fourth of July event on Independence Day.

“We performed well at Placerville this season and it was great to finish that off with such a strong run at the Tribute to Mac Tiner last Saturday,” Copeland commented. “Trevor Canales has given me some great cars in Pville this year and has definitely boosted my confidence each time we go back. I was able to work the cushion late in the race this past weekend and get around cars, but we just ran out of time at the end to catch Shane (Golobic). I was hoping for a caution to bunch things back up but to finish second in a field like that is something we’re proud of.”

Copeland began the evening by qualifying fourth in his group, before scoring a second place result in the heat race, which placed the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C inside row six for the 30-lap feature. He worked his way forward in the talent laden field and position himself in fifth when the final restart of the night occurred with eight laps remaining.

The 28-year-old then went directly towards the famed Placerville Speedway cushion, charging around Andy Forsberg, J.J. Hickle and Blake Carrick moving into second with just a few circuits left. Leader Shane Golobic was well out front by that point and Copeland eventually crossed the checkered in second, capping off an exceptional season when it comes to Winged Sprint Car racing at the bullring.

The Canales Racing team brought out a pair of cars to support the event with Trent Canales at the helm of the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes, Geico Insurance, American River Overhead Door Inc. No. 5T. He timed in fourth amongst his group, finished 11th in his heat race and eighth in the C-main.

Upcoming events for Canales Racing are still being determined.
