Canales Racing finishes off 2020 at Arizona Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Queen Creek, Arizona – December 1, 2020…Canales Racing and driver Colby Copeland put a wrap on the 2020 season by competing at the annual “Copper Classic” in Arizona this past weekend.

The season ender brought out stellar fields each night to do battle with the ASCS Southwest Region at the always exciting Arizona Speedway. The opener on Friday saw 54-entries sign in and Copeland began it by finishing sixth in his heat race, before transferring out of the B-main, where he went on to cap the evening by running 20th in the feature.

Coming back on Saturday the Roseville, California driver carved his way from eighth to fourth in his heat race, which was good enough to place him into a qualifier where he finished sixth. Once again, he was able to transfer out of the B-main to earn the 21st starting spot in the main event. The final 30-lapper of the season saw him move up and cross the stripe in 16th at the conclusion.

The COVID-19 abbreviated campaign ends with Copeland having piloted the Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes/ Eagle Companies Inc./ Geico Insurance No. 5C to a pair of victories and a number of solid runs throughout the season. Making 19 total starts the combination also brought home runner up finishes during both nights of the “Nor-Cal Posse Shootout” in Placerville and claimed a top-five at the “Ultimate Challenge” in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

“It was certainly a different kind of season, but we had a lot of fun and can chalk it up as a success,” commented the 28-year-old Copeland. “Picking up wins at the Tribute to Gary Patterson in Stockton and the 4th of July show at Placerville were definitely highlights. We put together several strong runs in Placerville and our trip to the Midwest was a great opportunity to learn more and more as a team. I want to thank all of our partners for making everything possible and can’t wait to hit the track again next year.”

Canales Racing and the No. 5C of Colby Copeland would like to thank Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes, Eagle Companies Inc., Geico Insurance, American River Overhead Door Inc., FVP, NOS Energy Drink, Northstar Concrete Pumping, Borello Race Engines, Performance Powder Coating and Sandblasting, Les Schwab Tires of Antelope, Harley Davidson of Rocklin and Folsom, Bianchi Farms, Vanlare Steering Repair, A.R.T.
